The Horse Miscarriage Salmonella Ag (HMS Ag) colloidal gold reagent is based on immunochromatography. Test strips have specific antibodies against Salmonella related to horse miscarriage immobilized on the nitrocellulose membrane. When a sample, such as uterine discharge or tissue from aborted fetuses, is added, if HMS Ag is present, it binds to colloidal - gold - labeled antibodies in the conjugate pad. The complex migrates along the membrane by capillary action. A positive test shows a red or purple test line where the complex binds to the immobilized antibodies, along with a control line validating the test.
