1. Detection Principle

The Horse Rabies Virus Ag (RBV Ag) colloidal gold reagent operates on immunochromatography. The test strip contains specific antibodies against rabies virus immobilized on the nitrocellulose membrane. When a sample, usually a swab from the horse's oral cavity or other relevant tissues, is added, if the rabies virus antigen (RBV Ag) is present, it binds to the colloidal - gold - labeled antibodies in the conjugate pad. This antigen - antibody - gold complex then migrates along the membrane by capillary action. If RBV Ag is in the sample, the complex will bind to the immobilized antibodies on the test line, forming a visible red or purple band. A control line is also present, and its appearance indicates the test is working properly.

2. Clinical Significance

  • Disease Diagnosis: Rabies is a fatal disease in horses. Detecting RBV Ag helps in early diagnosis. Horses with rabies may show behavioral changes, aggression, paralysis, and abnormal neurological symptoms. Early identification allows for immediate isolation and implementation of appropriate control measures to prevent the spread of the virus, both to other animals and potentially to humans.

  • Zoonosis Prevention: Since rabies is a zoonotic disease, diagnosing it in horses is crucial for public health. By using this reagent, veterinarians can quickly determine if a horse is infected, which is vital for safeguarding human health, especially for those in close contact with horses.

3. Advantages

  • Rapid Results: It can provide results within 10 - 15 minutes, enabling quick decision - making in case of suspected rabies cases.

  • User - Friendly: Requires minimal technical skills, making it accessible for veterinarians in the field, as well as in areas with limited laboratory facilities.

  • Visual Readout: The results are easily interpretable with the naked eye, as the appearance of the test and control lines clearly indicates positive or negative results.
