Symptoms

  • Chronic Diarrhea: Infected cattle, sheep, and goats have persistent, foul - smelling, watery diarrhea that worsens over time.

  • Weight Loss: Despite normal or increased appetite, animals experience progressive weight loss due to nutrient malabsorption.

  • Reduced Milk Yield: Dairy cattle see a significant drop in milk production and quality.

  • Lethargy: Affected animals become lethargic, with less activity and energy.

Clinical

  • Early Detection: Identifies MAP in the early, pre - symptomatic stage, allowing for isolation of infected animals.

  • Herd Screening: Regularly screens herds to find both sick and subclinical carriers for control measures.

  • Differential Diagnosis: Helps distinguish MAP from other similar - symptom - causing pathogens.

  • Disease Monitoring: Measures MAP nucleic acid levels to track disease progression in infected animals.

  • Quarantine: Used in ruminant trade quarantine to stop MAP spread across regions.
