Symptoms

  • Gastrointestinal

    • Food Poisoning: 8 - 24 hours after eating contaminated food, abdominal cramps and watery diarrhea occur. Nausea may be present, with rare vomiting. Usually self - limiting within 24 - 48 hours, but severe cases can cause dehydration.

    • Necrotizing Enteritis: Severe abdominal pain, bloody - mucous diarrhea. Intestinal wall necrosis may happen. Systemic symptoms like fever and shock can occur.

  • Wound Infections

    • Gas Gangrene: Wound area swells, painful, discolored with crepitus. Foul - smelling discharge. Tissue necrosis, fever, and systemic infection may follow.

Clinical Applications

  • Gastroenteritis Diagnosis: Quick identification in stool samples for patients with diarrhea and cramps. Faster than culture, guiding treatment and isolation.

  • Food - borne Outbreak Investigation: Helps determine if C. perfringens causes outbreaks. Useful for tracing contamination sources and preventing more cases.

  • Wound Infection Diagnosis: Tests wound samples. Early detection of C. perfringens in wounds, especially for gas gangrene, enables prompt treatment.

  • Antibiotic Resistance Monitoring: Detects resistance - related genes. Guides antibiotic choice and tracks resistant strain spread.
