Symptoms

  • Respiratory Symptoms:

    • Fever and Cough: Infected sheep and goats often experience a sudden onset of high fever, with body temperatures soaring up to 40 - 42°C. This is accompanied by a persistent, dry cough that may gradually become productive as the disease progresses. The cough can be so severe that it affects the animals' normal activities, such as grazing and movement.

    • Dyspnea: As the infection advances, the animals suffer from severe dyspnea. They show rapid, labored breathing, often with an open - mouth panting posture. The respiratory rate can increase significantly, sometimes reaching up to 60 - 80 breaths per minute. The effort to breathe is evident, and the animals may stand with their elbows splayed out to expand the chest cavity for better air intake.

    • Nasal Discharge: Initially, there is a clear nasal discharge, but as the inflammation in the respiratory tract worsens, it turns mucopurulent, becoming thick and yellowish - green in color.

  • General Symptoms:

    • Lethargy and Loss of Appetite: Infected animals become extremely lethargic, showing a lack of interest in their surroundings. They have a significant loss of appetite, which leads to rapid weight loss over time. This can be especially concerning for young and lactating animals as it affects their growth and milk production.

    • Arched Back and Abdominal Breathing: Due to the pain and discomfort in the chest area caused by pleural inflammation, the animals often stand with an arched back. They also rely more on abdominal muscles for breathing, as the normal chest - wall movement is restricted.

Clinical Applications of CCPP Nucleic Acid Detection Reagents

  • Early Detection and Isolation: The CCPP nucleic acid detection reagent enables the early identification of the causative agent, Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capricolum. Detecting the virus in the early stages, even before the appearance of obvious symptoms, allows for the immediate isolation of infected animals. For example, in a large - scale sheep or goat farm, if a few animals show a slight fever, using this reagent can quickly determine if CCPP is present, preventing the spread of the disease within the flock.

  • Herd - wide Screening and Monitoring: Regular screening of the entire herd using the CCPP nucleic acid detection reagent is crucial for disease prevention and control. It helps in identifying both clinically - affected and subclinical carriers. Subclinical carriers, although not showing visible symptoms, can still transmit the disease to other animals. By detecting these carriers, appropriate measures such as culling, isolation, or vaccination can be implemented to protect the overall health of the herd.

  • Differential Diagnosis: Since the symptoms of CCPP can be similar to those of other respiratory diseases in sheep and goats, like pneumonia caused by other bacteria or viruses, the nucleic acid detection reagent plays a vital role in accurate differential diagnosis. It allows veterinarians to distinguish CCPP from other diseases, ensuring that the correct treatment and management strategies are adopted.

  • Quarantine and Trade - related Purposes: In the context of sheep and goat trade, both domestic and international, the CCPP nucleic acid detection reagent is used for quarantine purposes. It ensures that the animals being transported or sold are free from CCPP, preventing the introduction and spread of the disease across different regions. This is essential for maintaining the health of disease - free areas and safeguarding the sheep and goat industry from economic losses associated with CCPP outbreaks.
