Equine herpesvirus types 1 and 4 (EHV - 1/4) are two closely related alpha - herpesviruses that pose a significant threat to the equine population. EHV - 1 is often associated with more severe and systemic infections, while EHV - 4 typically causes milder respiratory diseases. These viruses can be transmitted through direct contact, such as nasal secretions, or via aerosolized droplets. Infected horses may show a range of symptoms including fever, nasal discharge, cough, and in the case of EHV - 1, neurological disorders and abortion in pregnant mares. The latent infection of EHV - 1/4 is common, where the virus can remain dormant in the nerve ganglia of horses and re - activate under stress conditions.

Clinical Applications

The EHV - 1/4 nucleic acid detection reagent allows for rapid and accurate identification of the virus in symptomatic horses, differentiating between EHV - 1 and EHV - 4 for targeted treatment. It can detect the virus in the early, non - specific symptom stage, enabling prompt treatment. Regular herd screening on horse farms helps identify infected and subclinical cases for isolation, preventing virus spread. During outbreaks, the reagent assesses the infection scope for control measures like quarantine and vaccination. For pregnant mares, routine testing prevents EHV - 1 - induced abortions, with early detection allowing for proper management. In breeding programs, pre - breeding screening of stallions and mares stops virus transmission through breeding. The reagent also serves as a reliable tool for studying EHV - 1/4's genetic traits, mutation patterns, and pathogenesis at the molecular level, contributing to better virus understanding and treatment development. It evaluates new vaccine efficacy by detecting virus presence in vaccinated horses to measure their ability to prevent infection and reduce viral shedding.
